In August 2002 I took my first ram in the NWT with Mackenzie Mountain Outfitters (Stan & Helen Stevens) and guide Danny Stevens. I still recall Danny’s comment when we walked up on that ram: “Well, it’s your lucky day, you just shot a Fannin.” I wasn’t so sure at the time since I had been planning a Stone sheep hunt for 2004 and this just messed up everything. Well, with a Dall still on the to do list, I decided I might as well go back and hunt with Danny in 2004. I really enjoyed our first hunt, Danny is a great guide and I couldn’t think of a better place to go for Dall sheep.
I can’t say enough about Stan and Helen’s operation. It is truly first class and Danny is not only an outstanding guide he is a good friend. By the way, I saw some old photos of a younger Dennis Campbell (#613, AL) hanging on the wall of the Stevens’s cabin in Norman Wells. When were those photos taken? Looks like a 1970s hairdo. Maybe you can break out some of those old photos and share them with us sometime.
Anyway, my 10 1/2-year-old ram ended up measuring 40” x 39 5/8” with 13 3/4” bases. I guess now I’m half way to the Grand Slam.
